Discover the intriguing story behind the founding of Papa John’s restaurant. In 1984, John Schnatter embarked on an entrepreneurial adventure by installing an oven inside a broom closet in his father’s tavern, Mick’s Lounge, in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

With $1,600 worth of used pizza equipment and the sale of his beloved 1971 Camaro Z28, Schnatter began selling pizzas to the tavern’s customers. His ingenious idea found favor with customers, and a year later he expanded into an adjoining space. Schnatter’s enterprise was the birthplace of the popular dipping sauce specifically for pizza.

In 1993, the company went public, and in just four years it opened 1,500 stores. Schnatter’s passion for his 1971 Camaro Z28 made headlines when he purchased it back in 2009 for an impressive $250,000 reward.

In 2010, Bitcoin enthusiasts established “Bitcoin Pizza Day” to commemorate the first-ever Bitcoin transaction, in which 10,000 bitcoins were traded for two large Papa John’s pizzas. However, the popular pizza chain faced controversy when it’s founder and former CEO, John Schnatter, made racist remarks during a conference call with a marketing agency.

The incident resulted in Schnatter’s resignation from the company’s board and the implementation of bias and diversity training for employees. Following Schnatter’s departure, the company faced financial turmoil but received a $200 million investment from activist hedge fund Starboard Value and appointed new leadership in 2019.

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal also joined the board and became a spokesperson for the brand. Despite these changes, Schnatter began selling his shares in the company and eventually reduced his stock ownership to just 4%.

The company announced the appointment of Robert M. Lynch as CEO in August 2019, succeeding Steve Ritchie who was handpicked by Schnatter to succeed him in 2018.

Papa John’s made significant announcements regarding their corporate headquarters and branding in recent years. In September 2020, the company announced its plan to establish new headquarters in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Brothers Tom and James Monaghan purchased a small pizza restaurant in Ypsilanti, Michigan with a $500 down payment and $900 loan in 1960. Thanks to Tom’s leadership, Domino’s Pizza quickly grew and opened its first franchise in 1967, expanding to 200 stores by 1978. Despite a legal challenge in 1975, the company persevered under Tom’s vision and leadership.

Founder Tom Monaghan retired in 1998, selling 93% of the company to Bain Capital, Inc. for around $1 billion and appointing Dave Brandon as CEO. In 2004, Domino’s Pizza began trading on the New York Stock Exchange after being privately owned for 44 years and garnered numerous awards from Pizza Today magazine.

The company continued expanding and hitting milestones, opening its 5,000th American store in Illinois in 2006 and simplifying its name to “Domino’s” in 2012 while updating its logo.

Little Caesar Enterprises, Inc. is owned by Ilitch Holdings, which also holds the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Red Wings, teams that are known for playing nearby at Comerica Park and Little Caesars Arena, respectively.

Founded by Mike and Marian Ilitch in May 1959, Little Caesars Pizza began in Garden City, Michigan with its first location in a strip mall. California Pizza Kitchen, or CPK, is an American casual dining restaurant chain that specializes in pizza and other dishes. Founded in 1985 by attorneys Rick Rosenfield and Larry Flax, the restaurant has grown to become one of the most popular pizza chains in the United States. As of 2021, there are over 200 locations across the country.

History

California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) was founded in 1985 by Flax and Rosenfield, who pooled $200,000 in bank loans and savings with $350,000 invested from friends to lease space on Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills. They developed the first menu, featuring the famous BBQ Chicken Pizza, which was created by Ed LaDou, the pizza chef at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurant. CPK opened its doors to immediate success, expanding to 26 locations by 1992.

In 1992, PepsiCo acquired a 67% stake in the chain for nearly $100 million, with Flax and Rosenfield each receiving $17.5 million. However, PepsiCo’s push for rapid expansion caused problems, leading to a disaster due to cutting corners and replacing fresh ingredients with frozen ones.

In 1997, Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Company bought out PepsiCo’s stake to take CPK public in 2000 and resume expansion. However, a few years later, CPK faced difficult quarters ahead due to misleading financial reporting by the company’s executive team. Flax and Rosenfield stepped in to regain control, served as co-CEO and co-chairmen from 2003 to 2011, and sold CPK to Golden Gate Capital in 2011.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the company hard and led to a bankruptcy filing in 2020.
