History of Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut, the popular pizza chain, was founded in 1958 by two Wichita State students, Dan and Frank Carney, with the opening of a single location in Wichita, Kansas. Within a year, their six restaurants became a local phenomenon.

Bill Parcells, a college student and football player at Wichita State University, was an early employee who considered a franchise before pursuing coaching.

The company began franchising in 1959 and adopted its iconic building style in 1963. PepsiCo bought Pizza Hut in 1977 and spun it off along with Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1997. The company was rebranded as Yum! Brands in 2002.

The iconic Pizza Hut building style was designed in 1963 and implemented in 1969. PepsiCo acquired Pizza Hut in 1977, and 20 years later, it was spun off with Taco Bell and KFC to become Tricon Global Restaurants. Pizza Hut, under Yum! Brands since 2002, made headlines in 1994 with PizzaNet, a pilot program allowing consumers to order through the internet. The oldest continuously operating Pizza Hut once located in Manhattan, Kansas, closed in 2015.

Despite the pandemic’s negative impact on dine-in restaurants, Pizza Hut has remained influential and continues to grow.

The company announced a rebrand in 2014 that included an expanded menu and updated staff uniforms, intending to boost sales. Richtopia listed Pizza Hut as the 24th most influential brand in the world in 2017.

The chain plans to close about 500 dine-in restaurants by mid-2021, with an additional 300 closures due to the bankruptcy of one of its franchise providers announced in August 2020. Recently, Pizza Hut brought back its logo and red roof design from 1976-1999.

Pizza Hut has endured several changes over its long history, including one bankruptcy. Yet, it continues to provide delicious pizza and a convenient dining experience to people worldwide.

Concept of Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut offers various restaurant formats to cater to your dining preferences. Choose from our classic family-style dine-in locations, convenient storefront delivery and carry-out locations, or versatile hybrid locations that offer carry-out, delivery, and dine-in options. Our full-size Pizza Hut locations also serve lunch buffets, featuring unlimited pizza, salad, desserts, breadsticks, and a pasta bar. Beyond our diverse store types, Pizza Hut also has various independent business concepts in place.

Pizza Hut’s experimentation with Applegate’s Landing in 1975 brought about unique and charming Colonial Style house exteriors and creatively designed interiors that included a salad bar fashioned from a truck bed. The menu featured a blend of popular Italian-American dishes, like pizza and pasta, with a selection of additional items, including hamburgers and bread pudding. Sadly, Applegate’s Landing ultimately ceased operations in the mid-1980s, except for a single location in McPherson, Kansas, which closed in 1995.

Pizza Hut launched the “Pizza Hut Italian Bistro” in 2004, an upscale concept currently available at 50 locations across the US. While still offering classic Pizza Hut options, this menu also includes new, Italian-inspired dishes like penne pasta, chicken pomodoro, and toasted sandwiches. The Bistro locations feature a distinctive burgundy and tan color scheme, replacing the classic black, white, and red.

In some cases, traditional red roof locations have been transformed into the new Bistro design. Additionally, Pizza Hut Express locations operate as fast-food restaurants offering a limited menu that differs from traditional Pizza Hut fare. These stores are often combined with WingStreet in the US and Canada, as well as other sibling brands such as KFC or Taco Bell. Pizza Hut Express locations can be found in a variety of settings, including college campuses, food courts, theme parks, bowling alleys, and within stores such as Target.

Discover the iconic red roof Pizza Hut locations, designed by architect Richard D. Burke, across the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Mexico. While often overlooked in architectural circles, these buildings have left an indelible mark on popular culture.

According to Phillip Langdon’s book “Orange Roofs, Golden Arches,” these structures reflect shifting trends in taste and have become a familiar fixture on the American landscape.

Despite Pizza Hut’s decision to focus on delivery, over 6,000 traditional locations with their shingled roofs and trapezoidal windows still stand today. Many of the original sites boast a beer or full bar, jukeboxes, and arcades, embodying both suburban comfort and strip-mall character.

The red roof style was synonymous with the late 1960s and early 1970s, though today, some locations feature brown roofs. Although dozens of these restaurants have closed or been relocated or rebuilt, they remain beloved architectural icons for many. In the 1980s, Pizza Hut expanded into other formats, including delivery, carryout, and the fast-food “Express” model.

Product of Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut North America is renowned for offering a diverse range of pizza options, including:

Pan pizza, baked to perfection with a crispy edge

“Stuffed crust” pizza, where the cheese is wrapped around the outermost edge

“Hand-tossed” pizza, akin to traditional pizzeria crusts

“Thin ‘N Crispy”, the original Pizza Hut style with a thin, crispy dough

Dippin’ Strips pizza, sliced into small strips ideal for dipping into various sauces

The P’Zone, a calzone stuffed with delicious ingredients complemented by marinara dipping sauce in plain, Supremo, Meaty, and pepperoni flavors

The Bigfoot pizza, the largest offering from Pizza Hut

Priazzo, a pie-like pizza stuffed with the goodness of pizza ingredients

The “stuffed-crust” pizza was launched on March 26, 1995. This innovative offering quickly gained immense popularity, making it one of the most sought-after items on the menu by year-end.

Our company recognizes the importance of catering to regional tastes and preferences. In Southeast Asia, we have introduced the delectable Curry Zazzle, a baked rice dish that has been localized to suit the region’s culinary palate.

In 2008, Pizza Hut made an exciting move by launching “The Natural” pizza which boasted natural ingredients and was initially available in Seattle, Denver, and Dallas. However, as of October 27, 2009, it was decided to discontinue the product in the Dallas market.

Pizza Hut’s innovative recipe created a pizza specifically designed for space consumption. In 2001, this culinary achievement was delivered to the International Space Station, packed in a vacuum-sealed container with a diameter of approximately 6 inches (15 centimeters) to fit snugly inside the station’s oven. Launched on a Soyuz rocket, the pizza was relished in orbit by astronaut Yuri Usachov.

Pizza Hut has been on the move to revamp its business and improve profits. With a £60 million investment in its London branches, the franchise is now introducing cocktail bars and targeting the trendy “Nando’s generation.”

In the U.S., the chain is expanding beer delivery to 1,000 locations by the summer of 2019, and in 2021, they are celebrating 25 years of their classic stuffed crust pizza with a new menu item: “Nothing But the Stuffed Crust.”

But Pizza Hut doesn’t stop there; the Hong Kong branch has teamed up with furniture giant IKEA to create a new side table called SÄVA, inspired by a pizza saver.

With building instructions that suggest ordering a Swedish meatball pizza from Pizza Hut, the partnership promises to make your furniture-buying experience even more delicious.
