Pizza My Heart is a beloved pizzeria chain with over 25 locations scattered across the splendid San Francisco Bay Area. Established in 1981 in Capitola, California by entrepreneurs Fred Poulos and Keith Holtaway, the brand merged with San Jose-based Pizza-a-Go-Go a decade later, resulting in an enhanced and expanded menu. History

Founded on the picturesque Capitola Beach, Pizza My Heart remains a small yet iconic restaurant that all beach enthusiasts and surfers must visit. Despite its modest size, the establishment has become a staple landmark that resonates with the local community.

After achieving great success in Capitola, Pizza My Heart expanded to downtown Santa Cruz a few years later. The move provided residents and tourists with ample space to comfortably enjoy delicious, hot pies. Following unfortunate building damage caused by the ’89 earthquake, they relocated to the current spot on Pacific Avenue.

In 1997, the founders made a life-changing decision to focus on their passion for surfing, which led them to merge with Pizza A Go Go, an enterprise devoted to providing exceptional cuisine, excellent service, and a good time. Although they have expanded considerably since then, they have remained steadfast in the original philosophy that made us successful in Capitola back in 1981. Their unwavering commitment to crafting fresh, handmade pizza with the highest quality local ingredients, coupled with the patronage and positivity of their loyal customers, continues to drive their business today.

Theme

Pizza My Heart began as a unique idea – bringing an urban East Coast pizzeria concept to California, a novelty at the time.

Fred’s eclectic street photos, originally published in the Santa Cruz entertainment weekly “Good Times,” perfectly captured the vibe of this new venture when the first store opened on May 19, 1981.

The introduction of cartoonist “Awest” and his fun rendering of Fred’s characters as cartoons brought an even more exciting element to the already successful campaign. This resulted in a comic strip as an advertising tool. This campaign was incredibly successful, ultimately resulting in the establishment of the original Santa Cruz store in the downtown area’s old Transit Center.
